CROSS FIRE
Junko
Aoki looks like an ordinary office worker but was born with extra
sensory perception called pyrokinesis with which she can set fire
to anything anytime. To suppress her uncontrollable ability, she
takes her mothers advice to always be careful not to show
it. She is secretly in love with her co-worker, Kazuki Tada. One
day his sister Yukie is murdered. A boy named Kogure is suspected
as responsible for a series of murders of coeds. But the police
are reluctant to arrest him, because he is a minor. Taking advantage
of lack of evidence and enjoying the attention of the media, Kogure
arrogantly suggests that he might be the killer. Tada secretly seeks
vengeance alone. Junko tells him about her special power and her
decision to punish Kogure and his group of thugs
Meanwhile,
two detectives, Chikako Ishizu and Yasuaki Makihara, find that a
series of fires have something to do with the murders. A new ESP
boy appears before Junko. Koichi Kido can control another persons
mind merely by touching him or her. He tells Junko where Kogure
is, intending to rope her in. To stop Kogure and his gang, she hurries
to where they plan to attack their next victim. Fully exercising
her pyrokinesis, she defeats the thugs one by one. But before she
can give Kogure the final blow he makes a narrow escape.
Searching
for a clue to the mystery of incendiarism, the detectives find a
girl named Kaori Kurata who possesses both pyrokinesis and psychometry,
the ability to read memories in human minds and things.
But
the investigation is too slow. Junko is after Kogure, while the
detectives are still in the dark. Behind them, a bigger and more
hazardous trap is being set up
More
information:
Based
on Miyuki Miyabes book, which sold 700,000 copies soon after
it was published in October, 1998. "Crossfire" realistically
depicts the fury and sorrow of the persons who have ESP (extra sensory
perception), defining them as "ones with an overly endowed
faculty in comparison with the others." It impresses us with
deep emotion, which has never been obtained from other ESP stories.
The contents were so highly acclaimed that many movie companies
proposed to bring the book to the screen, and finally Toho Pictures
got it.
Shusuki
Kaneko, of the recent "Gamera" series and "Haunted
School 3", directs the picture. Exercising his bright and entertaining
character, this film is his first challenge in the Miyuki Miyabe
world. Akiko Yada is cast as Junko Aoki, the heroine, while Hideaki
Ito plays her co-worker Kazuki Tada. Veterans such as Kaori Momoi,
Ryuji Harada and Toshiyuki Nagashima support the young stars. Also
introduces in this film is a new star, Masami Nagasawa, the fifth
Toho Cinderella, to play the part of Kaori Kurata, another ESP girl.
