GEMINI

Dir: Tsukamoto Shinya Cast: Motoki Masahiro, Ryo, Tsutsui Yasutaka

In Gemini, the high priest of cyberpunk has gone medieval. But fear not, that has not stopped Tsukamoto Shinya (Bullet Ballet, 23rd HKIFF) from informing the film with his uniquely skewed vision and crazed energy.

In fact, situating it in history only makes it more fanatically powerful. A costume melodrama set in a hauntingly photographed Edo and with more than causal evocation of David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringer, it’s about long-seperated twin brothers in love with the same woman.

True to the spirit of Tsukamoto’s oeuvre, this is an eerie tale of class rage, revenge and re-revenge, amnesia both voluntary and involuntary and, as always, cathartic mayhem.
