Dir: Tsukamoto Shinya Cast: Motoki Masahiro, Ryo, Tsutsui Yasutaka

In Gemini, the high priest of cyberpunk has gone medieval. But fear not, that has not stopped Tsukamoto Shinya (Bullet Ballet, 23^rd HKIFF) from informing the film with his uniquely skewed vision and crazed energy.

In fact, situating it in history only makes it more fanatically powerful. A costume melodrama set in a hauntingly photographed Edo and with more than causal evocation of David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringer, it’s about long-seperated twin brothers in love with the same woman.

True to the spirit of Tsukamoto’s oeuvre, this is an eerie tale of class rage, revenge and re-revenge, amnesia both voluntary and involuntary and, as always, cathartic mayhem.
