La Comédie Humaine
Synopsis
To know real friendship in life is truly good fortune.
But it is by no means a given.
Two weeks ago, an unnamed assassin for hire from the Mainland meets Soya, a frustrated screenwriter in Hong Kong. The former is an epitome of coolness and the latter is the personification of a chatterbox. Two characters from polar opposite walks of life clash into each other, purely due to good fortune.
When a Mainland assassin gets separated from his amnesiac partner, he goes over to their pre-arranged rendezvous point on the rooftop of one of Hong Kong's countless buildings.
He waits and waits but his partner never shows up (he suffers from amnesia after all). When an unforeseen cold front causes the temperature to drop more than 10 degrees Celsius in the blink of an eye, the killer, who isn't dressed for this weather, briefly loses consciousness and knocks out Soya's TV antenna on the rooftop.
Kind-hearted and deprived of friendship, Soya rescues the fainted hit man and takes him home to make sure he is taken care of. The fiend’s killer instinct kicks into gear once he wakes but his weak physical state works against it. He fails miserably time and again in killing off his accidental savior, instead endearing himself more and more to Soya.
In his attempt to conceal his true identity, he uses his extensive knowledge of cinema, albeit derived from years of viewing pirated VCDs, to concoct a backstory that no one in his right mind would buy. He even concocts a fake name on the spot based on random articles found on the computer monitor and books lying around --- Seeto Spring Migration. Soya, however, chooses to blindly believe in his new friend's impossibly insane and randomply spliced together life story (using movie titles his eyes see in the room). Seeto is more certain than ever before that he ought to do the world a favor by ridding it of another moron.
Meanwhile, the good natured Soya wholeheartedly believes in this friendship that literally falls onto his lap. And with it, he decides to open the long-closed door into his little world.
Soya has a slightly psychotic girlfriend named Sky Love. She craves for romance but is fearful of blissfulness. She believes that the feeling of bliss is fleeting, deceiving and is often the beginning of misfortune in one's life.
As such, the more Soya spoils her, the more deranged she gets, often to the extent of inflicting physical harm onto him, closely followed always by feelings of remorse. Unfortunately, whenever Soya forgives her, she has no choice but to fall back into the the vicious cycle by attacking him all over again. Soya decides, for his own safety, to break up with Sky Love. She knows, however, that she will never meet another person quite like him and should never give up on him easily.
It got to a point where even Seeto got irritated by Tina's bipolar tendencies towards Soya. He
concludes that humanity is better served if he eliminated a character like her from it. He soon finds out that even a cold-blooded killer is no match for an insane woman.
By pure happenstance, Seeto meets a five month pregnant 16 year-old who tells him that she has only
two missions left in life – to give birth to the baby and kill off the boy responsible for her miserable state. When Seeto helps her locate the boy who impregnated her, she completely reverses the two things she thinks she most wants to accomplish. She cannot bear to see her boyfriend die and she no longer wants to carry her baby to full term. Seeto, who originally came to Hong Kong to take a victim’s life, ends up preserving the life of an unborn child.
Meanwhile, Seeto joins Soya for a brainstorming session at a film company. Coincidentally, the pitch Soya is working on is an action thriller with an assassin as a central character. Seeto's amazingly accurate insights into the life of a killer put the room full of professional screenwriters to shame and impressed the director. Soya feels most fortunate to have a friend like Seeto on his side.
Just as the odd pair's unlikely friendship comes to fruition, the amnesiac assassin re-emerges and their unholy mission is suddenly back on track again. Law enforcement has been trailing this case and wants to set up a sting by engaging Soya as a mole. This forces Soya to do everything he can to aid in his friend’s escape.
In a stunning turn of events, the two hit men confront the cops in a showdown but thanks to Soya they were able to extricate from the trap the police has set.
In their bid to escape from the cope, Seeto and his partner enter a darkened movie theater. Seeto sees an opportunity and slips behind the silver screen with his partner during the middle of the show. Just like that, the hit man who behaved like he walked out of the movies disappeared into the big screen.
Will Soya and Seeto ever meet again? Will Sky Love ever conquer her fear of being loved and accept Soya’s affection without trepidation? Will the teenage girl deliver her baby and will the baby ever see the person who saved his life one day? All these answers and more can be found, where else, but at the movies.
