ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Catherine Hardwicke

Choosing material that is at once both thought-provoking and controversial, Catherine Hardwicke has cemented her place as an auteur filmmaker and as a member of an all-too diminutive group of female directors. Her films have helped to redefine popular culture, showcase notable figures from the past and raise light on important social issues.  Hardwicke’s most recent directorial endeavor was the historical drama THE NATIVITY STORY.  Prior to the THE NATIVITY STORY, Hardwicke directed the Columbia Pictures feature film LORDS OF DOGTOWN.  Hardwicke also directed the critically acclaimed film THIRTEEN, a graphic look into the downwards spiraling lives of teens as they discover drugs, sex, and petty crime. She was honored with the prestigious Director’s Award from the 2003 Sundance Film Festival for THIRTEEN, which marked both her feature film directorial and screenwriting debut.  The film went on to win top awards at Deauville, Locarno, and Natucket film festivals and land a SPIRIT AWARD for Reed, Golden Globe nominations for Hunter and Wood, and an Academy Award nomination for Hunter.  A native of the South Texas border town McAllen, Hardwicke studied art in Mexico and received a degree in architecture from the University of Texas at Austin. After graduating, she designed and constructed a 20-acre passive solar townhouse complex built around a manmade lake complete with waterfalls, swimming pools and sculptures of the residents.  She then enrolled in UCLA’s Film School, taking graduate courses, where she completed her first animated/live action short. It won her a Nissan Focus Award and toured in the Landmark “Best of UCLA” film program. She has designed the production of more than 20 feature films.  Hardwicke’s upcoming projects include THE MONKEY WRENCH GANG, based on the original eco-activist novel by Edward Abbey, and SWERVE, a comedy based on Hardwicke’s original script about our love/hate affair with conspicuous consumerism and how it’s changing our planet…and our souls.  She is currently filming the big screen adaptation of TWILIGHT for Summit Entertainment.
