What Women Want

Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) is a very successful advertising executive. Long divorced and an absentee father of teenage daughter Alex, nick is very much a man’s man. Money, girls, alcohol–what else is there?

Expecting to be promoted to Creative Director after many years of success, Nick can’t believe it when the company poaches Darcy McGuire (Helen Hunt), a female execute from a rival firm instead. Women are now the big spenders and nick’s old fashioned, male orientated ways just aren’t relevant anymore. You need a woman to do a woman’s job…

When Darcy and Nick meet they immediately see the kind of person they were warned the other world be. Nick sees Darcy as a ball breaking, hard nosed, tight lipped feminist executive and she sees him as an old fashioned sexist pig! You know what they say about opposites attracting!

Darcy calls a meeting and hands out a pink box of female products that she wants the creative team to pitch for–Nick stares at the lipstick, the face packs, a home-waxing kit, a more wonderful Wonder Bra and assorted other stuff. He has no idea what to make of it all.

That night nick sits at his kitchen table working his way through a bottle of red wine, when he realises that the only way to understand how to sell these stupid things, is to try them out. Minutes later we find him with his face covered in green mud, lipstick on, hair volumiser applied, mascara glistening and hot wax heating up ready to be spread on. He looks at the harmless wax strip, enjoying the warm sensation as it soothes his drunken leg. He smiles happily as he prepares to give it a quick, gentle tug- just as the instructions describe.

They could have heard the screams in Alaska!

When he eventually recovers, he realises that his daughter Alex has suddenly turned up-with her new boyfriend! In the ensuing chaos, nick unsuccessfully reassures them that he’s not a transvestite, but they’re not so sure and they make their escape! Trying to catch them as he trips over the hairdryer cord, falls towards the bath–only to be followed by the dread hair dryer and WHAM! He’s given the electric shock of his life. Out cold, he lies spread-eagled in all his glory on the bathroom floor…

The next morning Nick wakes up with a weird headache. After re-assembling his male persona he rushes off to work, even later than usual. Then it happens. He start to hear strange voices-all of them female. Wherever he goes he hears women taling and though he is hearing words, he can’t see anybody speaking. Slowly it dawns on him- he can hear the thoughts of any woman he’s near to!

Nick realises that he can use his new found mind reading skills to his advantage in battle with his new boss. He’s able to second guess her very move, steal all her ideas, anticipate her emotions and make himself the kind of guy that seems to really understand women! Very soon all the women in the office are responding to him in ways that they never used to before and Nick becomes something of an agony aunt- as he has all the answers!

Nick is also doing very well on the business side. Suddenly his new found insight is giving him an enormous advantage as he comes up with ideas for the various different pitches they’re working on. He can’t believe his luck.

Then, curiously, he starts to change. All this new information is working on him and as he starts to truly understand the women around him, he begins to think that he may have been behaving pretty poorly before. He then realises that he is falling in love with Darcy and that she seems to be warming to him. To make maters even more complicated he’s doing too well at work and they’re thinking of sacking Darcy- and he knows that the only reason he’s doing well is because he is stealing all her ideas. He also knows that the only reason that Darcy has started to like him at all, is because he’s made himself the kind of guy she would fall for- because he can read her mind.

Now- he knows that he has to confess to her what he’s been doing, but he realises that one of the things that women hate most is a liar, so how on earth can he tell her the truth. He also has to stop her being fired, make sure they win the pitch, get his daughter to forgive him being such a hopeless father, and make sure he keeps the love of the lady he adores — and that’s after she’s found out that he’s a conniving, two faced, lying XXX**##?!!

It won’t’ be easy- but should be fun to watch!
